CancerFree KIDS
Location
Cincinnati, Ohio (hybrid)
Date
Spring 2023 - June 2025
Role
Social Media Coordinator (intern)
CancerFree KIDS is a nonprofit based out of Cincinnati, Ohio that seeks to find gentler, more effective childhood cancer treatments by funding innovative research projects in the early stages of development. They invest millions of dollars every year by providing grants to high-risk/high-reward childhood cancer research projects in crucial early stages. This allows researchers to prove their treatment methodology and secure additional funding to find new treatment therapies.
Madeleine Thompson began interning as a Social Media Coordinator for CancerFree KIDS in the spring of 2023, excited to be a part of an organization dedicated to a specialized, invaluable cause. Her responsibilities include raising awareness about the organization by generating social media content — notably on Facebook, Instagram, and LinkedIn — platforms. She monitors community engagement metrics and identifies potential ways to boost engagement through social media. From 2023 to 2024, she increased social media reach (who sees the post) by over 120% and social media engagement (likes, comments, shares, interactions) by over 500% as measured by social metric tracking.
Madeleine also facilitates participant engagement for various fund-raising events, including organizing email communication for the annual 100-Mile Challenge in September, resulting in increased turnout from the prior year. When able, she works organization events, from operating audio and Powerpoint to assembling participant merchandise to taking photos to share on social media platforms.
Working at CancerFree KIDS has fine-tuned Madeleine’s expertise in not only social platforms, but other programs such as Microsoft Suite, Meta Business Suite, Adobe Illustrator, Canva, Constant Contact, Loomly, and video production. She has learned to take on new challenges and tailor an organization’s mission to its audience in a way that maximizes not only reach, but success.
